Glenveagh National Park, Co. Donegal
Glenveagh National Park lies along the Derryveagh mountains in the northwest of County Donegal. It comprises 16,000 hectares of mountain, bogs, lakes and woods. Glenveagh Castle was built in 1870 from granite and is surrounded by its world famous gardens containing a rich variety of trees, shrubs and flowers from around the globe. Among its special features is the variety of Rhododendrons in the gardens themselves and the purple Rhododendron which grows prolifically across the park and is in flower in the Spring/early Summer. The beautiful walled garden is at its best in the summertime.
Glenveagh is home to many species of wild life including Ireland's largest herd of red deer with the Golden Eagle having been re-introduced into the park a number of years ago. Close to Glenveagh you will find Donegal's highest two mountains, Errigal and Muckish. This area is a haven for hikers.
The park is open all year round with many wonderful events taking place during the year, including Traditional music sessions, dancing, crafts, exhibitions, concerts and birds of prey viewing. Perhaps the real gem of Glenveagh is the wonderful walks for strolling or hiking which can be undertaken solo or Ranger led for the more experienced walker.
